The Green Heart of Haría

Created by British scientist David Riebold, The Green Heart of Haría is a wildlife garden of ecological significance on the island of Lanzarote, and the main site of my PhD research exploring the relationship between motherhood and landscape. The main output of this is a documentary art film titled, ‘Unimagined: mothering beyond the flesh’ due to be release in 2027, along with my PhD thesis.

Lanzarote is an endemic hotspot for flora in the world, yet many species are endangered, and David has made the garden a refuge for plants found nowhere else on earth.

During the four years of research, which has involved living in the site for many months over multiple research trips, the work generated here has grown many arms and legs. Along with making the documentary, my research has included creating a map and database of all species of flora within the garden, researching each plant and creating a website which acts as a digital repository, and a physical book (see below).

Furthermore, David and I have worked together on an ecological garden project at The British School of Lanzarote, and I am working with the school to create a book about Lanzarote’s unique wildlife for school children on the island. This will be published in 2027.
